Characteristics

Monoecious, ?annual. Leaves held close to stem; sheath 3–10 mm long; ligule deeply bifid; blade linear, 1–8 cm long, mostly 0.1–0.2 mm wide, entire, usually tapering to acute or acuminate apex. Most branches bearing 1 or 2 female and 1 or 2 male flowers clustered together within subtending leaf sheaths, some clusters with all female flowers (particularly in inflorescence upper branches). Male flowers with pedicel 3–5 mm long; anther mass c. 1 mm long, 6-celled. Female flowers with perianth segments bifid, 1–2.5 mm long, not (except for styles and stigmas) projecting beyond leaf sheaths; pedicels 0.5–1 mm long; style c. as long as fruiting ovary; stigma narrow, obliquely funnel-shaped with serrate margin. Fruiting carpels asymmetrically oblong, smooth, c. 2 mm long, l:w 1.5–3, shorter than (or equal to) perianth and remaining enclosed within it; carpophore 0.2–0.5 mm long.
