Characteristics

Perennial herbs with bulbs. Leaves basal, broadly linear, distichous, annual. Inflorescence scapose, an umbel; spathe 2-valved. Flowers bisexual, funnel-shaped, usually slightly zygomorphic, pedicellate, slightly nodding, strongly fragrant. Perianth segments 6, connate as base. Stamens 6; anthers linear, curved, dorsifixed, versatile, dehiscing by slits, introrse. Ovary inferior, trilocular, oblong; ovules many per locule; placentation axile; style 1; stigma 3-lobed. Fruit a subglobose berry-like capsule, rupturing at maturity. Seeds few, green or pink.
