Characteristics

Caespitose. Culms to 150 cm high. Leaves: ligule (4–) 7–11 mm long; blade to 30 cm long, 2–3.5 mm wide, adaxially scabrous, abaxially glabrous. Panicles to 20 cm long; primary branches paired or clustered, appressed. Spikelets 7–11 mm long, with 3–6 chasmogamous bisexual florets; pedicel to 10 mm long. Glumes subequal; lower glume 3.3–5.5 mm long, 1–3-nerved; upper glume 4–5.5 mm long, 3–5-nerved. Lowest lemma 4–5.5 mm long, 4-toothed, 5–7-nerved, densely hispid; teeth 0.43–1 mm long, ±equal or outer pair shorter, often purplish; awn arising 35–50% of lemma length below tip, 9–18 mm long, geniculate, with column slightly twisted. Palea obtuse. Caryopsis 1.8–2.3 mm long.
