Characteristics

Stoloniferous and rooting at lower nodes. Culms decumbent and ascending, to 70 cm high; basal culm internodes sometimes swollen. Leaves: ligule 5–11 mm long; blade to 17 cm long, 1–4 mm wide, adaxially scabrous on veins, abaxially scabrous. Panicles to 21 cm long; primary branches paired or clustered, spreading or appressed. Spikelets 12–21 mm long, with 4–7 cleistogamous or chasmogamous bisexual florets; pedicel to 20 mm long. Glumes unequal; lower glume (3–) 3.7–4.5 mm long, 1–3-nerved; upper glume (3.5–) 4.3–6 mm long, 3–5-nerved. Lowest lemma (4.5–) 6.2–8.2 mm long, 4-toothed, 7-nerved, scabrous; inner teeth 0.5–1 mm long, with outer teeth smaller and lower; awn arising 35–50% of lemma length below tip, 14–26 mm long, straight or curved, with column twisted or not. Palea acute. Caryopsis 2.3–2.7 mm long.
