Characteristics

Caespitose. Culms to 100 cm high; basal culm internodes swollen. Leaves: ligule 9–12 mm long; blade to 35 cm long, 3–4 mm wide, adaxially scabrous on veins, abaxially glabrous. Panicles to 15 cm long; primary branches paired or clustered, spreading, becoming flexuose. Spikelets 8–11 mm long, with 3 or 4 chasmogamous bisexual florets; pedicel to 10 mm long. Glumes unequal to subequal; lower glume 3.2–3.4 mm long, 3-nerved; upper glume 3.6–4 mm long, 5-nerved. Lowest lemma 5–5.5 mm long, 4-toothed with each tooth extended into a short bristle, 7-nerved with nerves often dark-coloured in teeth, papillose with prickle hairs (hispid) on nerves; inner teeth 0.7–1.4 mm long (including bristles), with outer teeth shorter; awn arising c. 50% of lemma length below tip, 10–12 mm long, geniculate, with column twisted. Palea acute. Caryopsis 1.9 mm long.
