Characteristics

Plants 10–50 cm high; rhizome horizontal or oblique, often well developed. Shoots extravaginal. Leaves sparsely hirsute or glabrous; blade rolled when fresh, (1.5–) 4–15 cm long, c. 0.5 mm wide. Inflorescences ovoid to spherical, 7–15 mm long, 4–13 mm wide. Sterile spikelets 4–6 per inflorescence, often involucre-like. Bisexual spikelets 4.7–8.5 mm long. Glumes 4.7–8.5 mm long, entire, with long-acuminate flattened apex, awnless, purple or grey; lower glume scabrous or hirsute; upper glume hirsute or tuberculate-hairy all over. Floret 3.2–4.9 mm long. Lemma: callus 0.15–0.3 mm long, blunt; body 1.9–2.9 mm long, moderately densely pubescent all over except sparse to absent just below lobes; lobes ±triangular, 1.3–1.9 (–2.7) mm long with laterals slightly shorter, acute to acuminate, muticous, puberulous or scabrous. Anthers 1.6–2 mm long. Styles free or extensively fused. Stigmas white.
