Plants 30–50 cm high; rhizome short, compact, oblique. Shoots intravaginal. Leaves glabrous or sparsely scaberulous; blade rolled when fresh, 9–15 cm long, 0.4–0.5 mm wide. Inflorescences narrowly ovoid to cylindrical, 10–40 mm long, 7–15 mm wide. Sterile spikelets absent or present, 1–3 per inflorescence, not involucre-like. Bisexual spikelets 10–14 mm long; glumes entire, 10–14 mm long, acuminate into a short awn-tip, glabrous or sparsely puberulous or sparsely scabrous all over or on the upper two-thirds, lacking tubercle-based hairs and large setae, pale brown, sometimes purple-tinged; callus 2–2.4 mm long, pungent; lemma body c. 4 mm long, densely sericeous all over; lemma lobes equal, 6–7 mm long including a well-developed 3–4 mm long scabrous awn, sericeous in basal part then abruptly sparsely scabrous. Anthers 3–4.3 mm long. Styles shortly fused. Stigmas brown to golden.
Sandy soils, sometimes associated with rocks, in forest orshrubland, growing in dry sites or near swampy depressions and on river banks.
