Characteristics

Plants 15–40 cm high; rhizome horizontal, not well-developed, consisting of tightly packed and slightly swollen shoot bases. Shoots intravaginal. Leaves glabrous or scaberulous; blade flat or rolled when fresh, 2.5–12 (–20) cm long, 0.7–1 mm wide. Inflorescences ovoid to cylindrical, 10–40 mm long, 4–9 (–16) mm wide. Sterile spikelets 0–3 per inflorescence, not forming a distinct involucre. Bisexual spikelets 8.3–10 mm long; glumes 4–7 mm long, deeply 3-lobed, acute to acuminate, not awned, glabrous or scabrous, lacking tubercle-based hairs, green or straw-coloured, often purpletinged; callus 0.4–0.9 mm long, acute; lemma body 2.9–4.4 mm long, sparsely scabrous all over; lemma lobes subequal, 4.9–6.7 mm long, acuminate, tapering evenly to a short awn-tip c. 1–2.5 mm long, scabrous to microscaberulous. Anthers 2.2–4.6 mm long. Styles fused basally. Stigmas white to cream.
