Plants (12–) 20–110 cm high; rhizome very short, horizontal. Shoots extravaginal. Leaves glabrous or sparsely to very sparsely villous or pilose. Sterile spikelets several per inflorescence, involucrelike. Bisexual spikelets: glumes shorter than floret, entire, acuminate, shortly awned, tuberculatehairy all over, straw-coloured; floret 7–25 mm long; callus 0.2–0.3 mm long, blunt; lemma body pubescent all over; lemma lobes subequal, at least twice as long as body, puberulous or scabrous, with scabrous awn. Anthers 1.3–2.7 mm long. Styles free but bases close together. Stigmas white.
