Characteristics

Plants 40–100 cm high, loosely tufted; rhizome small and compact, not elongated. Shoots intravaginal. Leaves glabrous or puberulous, especially between ribs; blade rolled when fresh, 5–20 cm long, 0.5 mm wide. Inflorescences hemispherical or turbinate, 20–24 mm long, 21–30 mm wide. Sterile spikelets several, involucre-like. Bisexual spikelets 11–12 mm long in situ, 11–15.5 mm long when awn straightened; glumes 9.5–12 mm long, acuminate, entire, awned, scabrous, with indumentum all over or only along keels, bronze and purple; glume hairs not tubercle-based; callus 0.3–0.5 mm long, blunt; lemma body 3–3.5 mm long, unevenly pilose all over; central lobe 9–11.5 mm long including 5–6 mm awn; central lemma awn twisted and curved to one side, scabrous; lateral lemma lobes 3.5–5 mm long including a straight awn. Anthers c. 3.3 mm long. Styles free. Stigmas white.
