Characteristics

Plants 15–50 cm high; rhizome well developed, horizontal. Shoots extravaginal. Leaves glabrous, villous or puberulous; blade flat or rolled when fresh, 3.5–15 cm long, 0.5–1 mm wide. Inflorescences ovoid, linear or cylindrical, 12–20 mm long, 6–10 mm wide. Sterile spikelets usually lacking, sometimes 1–few present, only occasionally involucre-like. Bisexual spikelets 7–10.5 mm long; glumes 4.5–6 mm long, entire, acute or obtuse with a small point, not awned, scaberulous or puberulous all over, with hairs often gland-tipped, and in addition hirsute or setose with several large setae or hairs (often tubercle-based) on sides in upper part, green, pale brown or strawcoloured, often purple-tinged; callus 0.2–0.6 mm long, blunt; lemma body 2.5–4 mm long, with indumentum of 2 densely silky vertical bands; lemma lobes equal, 5–7 mm long including a short awn-tip 1–2 mm long, scaberulous or puberulous; lemma awn-tips plumose with tip scabrous for 0.3–0.8 mm. Anthers 4–5 mm long. Styles partially fused. Stigmas red.
