Plants 10–66 (–90) cm high, loosely tufted; rhizome well developed, horizontal or oblique. Shoots extravaginal. Leaves glabrous, sparsely hirsute or pilose; blade rolled when fresh, 1–10 (–17.5) cm long, 0.8 mm wide. Inflorescences turbinate to globular, 17–30 mm long, 22–35 mm wide. Sterile spikelets usually several, involucre-like. Bisexual spikelets 14–21.5 mm long; glumes 7–13 mm long, entire, acute or upper glume shortly to long-acuminate or shortly awned, hirsute on upper oneto two-thirds, puberulous or scabrous or glabrous in lower part, grey; glume hairs not tubercle-based; callus 2.4–3.5 mm long, pungent; lemma body 5–6.7 mm long, densely sericeous or pubescent all over; lemma lobes equal, sparsely scabrous, 8.4–14.5 mm long including a well-developed 6.8–12.5 mm long scabrous awn. Anthers 3.8–5 mm long. Styles free or basally joined. Stigmas red.
Favouring sandy soils, growing on dry sites in heathland,shrubland, Banksia woodland and eucalyptforest.
