Sessile spikelet 5–11 mm. long, including a large oblong callus 1–3 mm. long; lower glume lanceolate-elliptic to narrowly ovate, slightly convex to slightly concave on the back, papyraceous to thinly coriaceous, ± 7-nerved between the lateral keels, glabrous to villous, winged or wingless, bidentate; upper glume with an awn 3–9 mm. long; upper lemma bilobed to the middle, with an awn 10–25 mm. long.. Pedicelled spikelet lanceolate to narrowly ovate, 4–9 mm. long, winged or wingless, mostly with both glumes awned, the longer 2–8 mm. long.
