Characteristics

Tufted perennial; culms 50–250 cm. high.. Leaf-blades 10–40 cm. long, 2–7 mm. wide, flat or folded, abruptly acute.. Inflorescence of paired racemes gathered into a loose false panicle; racemes 3–4 cm. long, loose, the spikelets often untidily divergent; internodes and pedicels filiform, arcuate, 3–4.5 mm. long, ciliate with hairs 1–2 mm. long.. Sessile spikelet 4–6 mm. long, with a short callus; lower glume linear, concave, thin and nerveless between the keels, glabrous, wingless; upper glume awnless; upper lemma bifid for 1/3–1/2 its length, with a geniculate awn 5–25 mm. long.. Pedicelled spikelet narrowly lanceolate, 4–7 mm. long, glabrous, with or without an awn up to 6 mm. long.

Racemes in pairs, 3–4.5 cm long, zig-zag, exserted from the spatheoles at maturity; peduncles longer than the racemes; internodes and pedicels filiform, divergent, clavate above, ciliate on both margins, the hairs much longer towards the apex.
Sessile spikelet: inferior glume with broad median groove, glabrous; superior lemma bifid to about half way; awn geniculate, 11–15.5 mm long; anthers 2–2.5 mm long, straw-coloured.
