Characteristics

Rhizomatous perennial, 80-700 mm high; culms branched below, reddish. Leaf blade pilose; leaf base auriculate, tapering to fine point; ligule a very short, fimbriate membrane. Inflorescence paired or digitate, of 2 spike-like racemes, crowded into a spatheate false panicle, glabrous to densely hairy; pedicels and internodes slightly clavate, glabrous to hairy on margins; spikelets paired: one sessile, the other pedicelled. Sessile spikelet 5.0-8.5 mm long; lower glume asymmetrical, margins with hyaline wings, rarely wingless, flat or with a shallow median groove, hairs longer than 1 mm or glabrous, bidentate, often mucronate; upper glume awn 2-6 mm long. Florets 2; lower floret awnless; upper floret bisexual, lemma 2-lobed to ± middle, awned, sometimes entire and awnless, awn 10-15 mm long, geniculate, conspicuous with a glabrous or hairy twisted column; callus oblong, up to 1 mm long. Pedicellate spikelet 4-8 mm long, male; lower glume awn 1-3 mm long; upper glume mucro 0.7-1.4 mm long (rarely longer. Flowering time Feb.-June.
More
Tufted perennial 80-700 mm high, rhizomatous; base glabrous or only scattered hairs present; culms branched below. Leaf blade 10-150 x 1-4 mm, sparsely to densely hairy; base auriculate, tapering to a fine point; ligule a very short, fringed membrane. Inflorescence of 2 racemes per spatheole, 30-80 mm long; pedicels and internodes linear to slightly clavate, long hairy on both margins. Sessile spikelet 5.0-8.5 mm long; glumes lack pits between nerves; lower glume keels with hyaline asymmetrical wings, rarely wingless, flat or with a shallow median groove, bidentate, often mucronate or minutely awned, glabrous or with hairs longer than 1 mm; upper glume awn 2-6 mm long; upper lemma bilobed to about middle, awn 10-15 mm long, geniculate; callus oblong, up to 1 mm long; anthers 2-3 mm long. Pedicellate spikelet 4-8 mm long; male; glumes winged; lower glume awn 1.0-3.5 mm long; upper glume awn 0.7-2.0 mm long (rarely longer).
Perennial, either straggling with wiry rhizomes or in short dense tufts; culms 8–60 cm. high.. Leaf-blades 1–15 cm. long, 1–4 mm. wide, flat or convolute with narrow midrib.. Racemes paired, terminal, 2–8 cm. long, purplish; internodes and pedicels linear or the latter slightly clavate, ciliate to villous.. Sessile spikelet 5–8.5 mm. long, including a cuneate callus up to 1 mm. long; lower glume narrowly lanceolate to narrowly elliptic, slightly convex to slightly concave on the back, thinly coriaceous to papery, 2–6-nerved between the lateral keels, glabrous to villous, winged or wingless, bidentate; upper glume with an awn 2–6 mm. long; upper lemma bilobed to the middle, with an awn 10–15 mm. long.. Pedicelled spikelet narrowly lanceolate to narrowly ovate, 4–8 mm. long; winged or wingless, with an awn 1–3 mm. long (rarely the second glume with an awn-point).
Perennial; 0.08-0.70 m high; rhizomatous; tufted; base glabrous or with scattered hairs. Leaf blades 10-150 x 1-4 mm. Flowers: inflorescence digitate; spike-like; racemes 2 per spathe; pedicels linear or slightly clavate; densely long hairy; spikelets 5.0-8.5 mm long; lower glume of sessile spikelets flat on back; hairs > 1 mm long; but inflorescence not plumose; upper lemma awn 10-15 mm long.
Sessile spikelet 6–12 mm long; inferior glume flat or with a shallow median groove, rarely slightly convex on the back, winged, minutely pilose or glabrous, often mucronate at the apex; superior glume convex on the back and with an awn 4–5 mm long; superior lemma bifid to about the middle; awn geniculate, 13–14.5 mm long.
Racemes in terminal pairs, 5–6.5 cm long, clearly exserted from the spatheoles only at maturity; peduncles much longer than the racemes; internodes and pedicels ± clavate, glabrous to ciliate on both margins.
Leaves often falcate, sparsely to distinctly pilose; ligule a very short (0.3–0.6 mm) membrane; laminas 4–13 cm × 1.8–3 mm, ± revolute, auriculate at the base, tapering to a fine point at the apex.
Spikelets similar; inferior glumes asymmetrical with 2 unequally broad hyaline marginal wings, 2-dentate or 2-mucronate at the apex; superior glumes awned.
Pedicelled spikelet male, 6–8 mm long; inferior glume with an awnlet 2–3 mm long; superior glume with a mucro 0.7–1.4 mm long.
Perennial, tufted or with short underground rhizomes, about 30 cm. high.
Creeping perennial; culms 50–80 cm high, branched below, reddish.
