Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Andropogon

Characteristics

Densely tufted perennial 600-1200 mm high; base slightly bulbous, knotty; culms branched, glaucous. Leaf blade 100-400 x to 8 mm, tapering to a fine point, sheaths glabrous, auricles well developed, triangular; ligule a fringed membrane, 1.5-4.0 mm long. Inflorescence of 2-3 racemes per spatheole, 30.5-90.5 mm long; pedicels and internodes inflated, clavate, lobed at apex, both margins hairy, hairs white, to 6 mm long; callus hairs visible at apex of internode. Sessile spikelet 5-8 mm long, strongly compressed between internode and pedicel; glumes lack pits between nerves; lower glume deeply and narrowly grooved, loosely hairy to glabrous; upper glume convex on back, bilobed, awn 4-9(12) mm long; upper lemma bidentate to middle, awn 20-35 mm long, geniculate; callus short, broad, obtuse, shallowly inserted in internode apex; anthers 2.2-3.5 mm long. Pedicellate spikelet 4-7 mm long, male; lower glume hairy, bilobed, awn (3.5)4.0-8.0 mm long; upper glume awn 0.7-5.0 mm long or awnless.
More
Tufted perennial; culms 60–200 cm. high.. Leaf-blades 10–40 cm. long, 1–8 mm. wide, glabrous or pubescent, ± glaucous, often with sheath-auricles up to 4 mm. long.. Inflorescence of paired (rarely more) racemes exserted from linear spatheoles and gathered into a loose, sometimes scanty, false panicle; racemes 3–7(–10) cm. long, pilose to villous; internodes and pedicels cuneate, ciliate on both margins with hairs 1–3 mm. long.. Sessile spikelet 5–8 mm. long, including a short callus; lower glume linear, deeply depressed between the dorsal keels, glabrous; upper glume with an awn (1–)4–12 mm. long; upper lemma bidentate, with an awn 2–3.5 cm. long, occasionally less.. Pedicelled spikelet lanceolate to narrowly elliptic, 4–7 mm. long, pallid to purplish, glabrous to pilose, mostly 2-awned, the longer (2–)4–10 mm. long, the other much shorter or sometimes suppressed.. Fig. 180/3, p. 769.
Perennial. Culms tufted, 40–100 cm tall. Leaf sheaths glabrous or pilose; leaf blades linear, flat or involute when dry, 8–25 × 0.2–0.3 cm, both surfaces pilose or abaxial surface glabrous; ligule 1–2.5 mm. Inflorescence a scanty spathate compound panicle; spatheoles linear; racemes paired, 1.5–3(–5) cm, exserted from spatheole; peduncle puberulous; rachis internodes and pedicels cuneate, margins ciliate with 1–3 mm hairs, tips cupular, obliquely toothed. Sessile spikelet linear, ca. 5 mm; lower glume deeply concave between dorsal keels, glabrous, apex acute or 2-toothed; upper glume awned, awn 6–10 mm; upper lemma 2-lobed; awn 2–3 cm. Anthers ca. 3 mm. Pedicelled spikelet oblong-lanceolate, 3.5–4.5 mm, 2-awned; awn of lower glume 4–10 mm, awn of upper glume much shorter. Fl. and fr. Aug–Dec.
Perennial, densely tufted, up to 1.2 m high, glaucous grey, reddish tinged. Leaf blades 100-400 mm long, up to 8 mm wide. Base slightly bulbous; culms branched. Spikelets (sessile) 5-7 mm long (pedicellate somewhat shorter). Racemes 2 or 3 per spatheole, pedicels cuneate lower glume of sessile spikelets deeply and narrowly grooved, upper glume awned, both glumes of pedicellate spikelets with an awn 4-7 mm long.
Sessile spikelet 6–8 mm long, strongly compressed between internode and pedicel, the short callus shallowly inserted; inferior glume with a deep median groove, loosely pilose; superior glume convex on the back, 2-toothed at the tip and with an awn 5–9 mm long; superior lemma bifid to the middle; awn geniculate, 24–30 mm long; anthers 2.2–3.5 mm long, straw-coloured.
Racemes in pairs, 3.5–9.5 cm long, exserted from the spatheoles only at maturity, silvery with white hairs; peduncles much longer than the racemes at maturity; internodes and pedicels strongly clavate with cilia up to 6 mm long on both margins, the pedicel bilobed at the apex.
Pedicelled spikelet male, 4.5–7 mm long; inferior glume loosely pilose, often 2-toothed at the apex, usually purplish-orange, with an awn 3.5–7 mm long; superior glume often with an awn 0.7–5 mm long.
Leaf sheaths glabrous, with well developed auricles; ligule a short (1.5–4 mm) minutely fringed membrane; laminas 7–20 cm × 5–8 mm, very often involute, tapering to a very fine point.
Caespitose perennial; culms up to 170 cm high, erect, branched, often glaucous.
