Characteristics

Tufted perennial; culms 30–100 cm. high.. Leaf blades narrow, 10–25 cm. long, 1–2 mm. wide, the tip finely attenuate; ligule membranous, 1.5–3 mm. long.. Inflorescence of paired (rarely up to 4) racemes, usually 2–4 pairs forming a scanty false panicle, this sometimes reduced to a single pair; racemes 4–9 cm. long, loose, ± plumose; internodes and pedicels filiform, arcuate, 4–6 mm. long, villous to plumose with hairs 2–5 mm. long.. Sessile spikelet 5.5–7 mm. long, including a cuneate callus up to 1 mm. long; lower glume narrowly lanceolate, concave, nerveless or obscurely 2-nerved between the keels, glabrous, wingless; upper glume acute or with an awn-point up to 1 mm. long; upper lemma bilobed for 1/3–1/2 its length, with a geniculate awn 10–15 mm. long.. Pedicelled spikelet well developed, narrowly lanceolate, 5–7 mm. long, with or without an awn-point up to 1 mm. long.

Racemes in terminal pairs, 4–7.5 cm long, ± plumose, long-exserted from the spatheoles; peduncles much longer than the racemes; internodes and pedicels filiform, ciliate with silky hairs up to 5 mm long on both margins.
Sessile spikelet: inferior glume with a broad median groove, glabrous; superior lemma bifid in the upper 1/4–1/3; awn 9–20 mm long, geniculate; anthers 2.5–3.5 mm long, straw-coloured.
Leaves glabrous except for scattered long hairs near the ligule; ligule (1)1.5–4 mm long, ± acute, shortly fimbriate; laminas 7–60 cm × 1–1.5 mm, linear.
