Characteristics

Perennial, forming tussocks; culms 45–100 cm. high.. Leaf-blades 15–50 cm. long, ± 2 mm. wide (rarely more), stiffly erect, harsh, file-like, the midrib occupying almost 1/3 the width of the upper surface.. Racemes paired (rarely up to 5), terminal, 6–14 cm. long, slender, purplish; internodes and pedicels linear, ciliate.. Sessile spikelet 6.5–8 mm. long, including a cuneate callus 1 mm. long; lower glume narrowly elliptic, slightly concave to flat on the back, thinly coriaceous, 2–5-nerved between the keels, glabrous, inconspicuously winged, minutely bidenticulate; upper glume with an awn 2–4 mm. long; upper lemma bifid beyond the middle, with an awn 8–20 mm. long.. Pedicelled spikelet linear to narrowly lanceolate, 4.5–8 mm. long, glabrous, with a short awn 0.5–3 mm. long.

Sessile spikelet 8–9 mm long, longer than the internode, the callus conical and with a ring of long hairs; inferior glume slightly convex on the back, loosely pilose; superior glume ± flat on the back and with an awn 2–4 mm long; superior lemma bifid to the middle; awn geniculate, 9–15 mm long; anthers not seen.
Racemes in terminal pairs (rarely solitary), switch-like, 4–6 cm long, long-exserted from the spatheoles; peduncles much longer than the racemes; internodes and pedicels filiform with scattered cilia up to 2 mm long on both margins.
Leaves sparsely pilose, scabrid; sheaths auriculate; ligule a short (2–3 mm) membrane; laminas 6–47 cm × 2–4 mm, stiffly erect, almost reduced to just the keel, the narrow margins revolute, tapering to a very fine point at the apex.
