Andropogon perligulatus Stapf

Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Andropogon

Characteristics

Tufted perennial; culms 50–150 cm. high, erect.. Leaf-blades narrow, 10–40 cm. long, 1–5 mm. wide; sheath-auricles and ligules 3–12 mm. long, usually glabrous at the throat.. Inflorescence of paired racemes, occasionally terminal but usually up to 8 loosely gathered into a false panicle; racemes 3–8 cm. long, purplish; internodes and pedicels cuneate, ± as wide as the gap between them, sparsely ciliate.. Sessile spikelet 4–6 mm. long, including a short blunt callus; lower glume linear, deeply depressed between the dorsal keels, glabrous; upper glume acute or with an awn-point up to 3 mm. long; upper lemma bilobed almost to the middle, with an awn 10–20 mm. long.. Pedicelled spikelet narrowly lanceolate, 3.5–6 mm. long, scaberulous on the nerves, glabrous, acute or mucronate (rarely up to 2 mm.).
More
Sessile spikelet 4.5–5 mm long, with rounded callus; inferior glume with a deep median groove, glabrous; superior glume strongly convex on the back, 2-toothed at the apex, with a mucro up to 2 mm long; superior lemma 2–3.5 mm long, bifid almost to the base; awn 1–2-geniculate, 18–29 mm long; anthers 2–2.7 mm long, bright red.
Racemes in pairs, 1.5–7.5 cm long, ± terete, clearly exserted from the spatheoles; peduncles much longer than the racemes; internodes and pedicels ± strongly canaliculate, very broad and thin, slightly clavate, ciliate on both margins with hairs 0.5–1 mm long.
Leaf sheaths with well developed auricles, glabrous; ligule (1.5)2.5–6 mm long, truncate; laminas 7.5–33 cm × 1–3.2 mm, revolute with a conspicuous keel, shortly and densely pilose, tapering to a very fine point at the apex.
Pedicelled spikelet male or sterile in the same plant, 4–6 mm long; inferior glume with scattered short hairs and an awnlet up to 1.5 mm long.
