Characteristics

Perennial forming large clumps, the basal sheaths flabellate; culms 1–2.5 m. high.. Leaf-blades narrow, up to 60 cm. long, 3 mm. wide, stiff, harsh, revolute.. Inflorescence of subdigitate (5–40-nate) racemes gathered into a large open false panicle; racemes 3–12 cm. long, pallid or purplish; internodes and pedicels filiform, straight or arcuate, ciliate (hairs 2 mm. long) or almost glabrous except for the callus beard.. Sessile spikelet 4–5.5 mm. long, with a short callus; lower glume linear to narrowly lanceolate, concave, nerveless between the keels, glabrous, wingless; upper glume awnless; upper lemma bilobed for 1/4–1/2 its length, with a geniculate awn 5–12 mm. long.. Pedicelled spikelet narrowly lanceolate, 3–5.5 mm. long.
