Sessile spikelet laterally compressed; callus obtuse and fitting the concave top of the internode; inferior glume cartilaginous, 2-keeled, the keels dorsal, almost contiguous, separated by a narrow groove, not winged; superior glume strongly laterally compressed, conspicuously winged on the keel towards the apex; inferior floret male, with hyaline lemma and well developed palea; superior lemma bifid, passing between the teeth into a glabrous awn.
