Characteristics

Perennial. Leaf-blades broadly linear; ligule a line of hairs. Inflorescence a solitary raceme, these terminal and axillary; internodes and pedicels swollen, ± clavate, ciliate. Sessile spikelet laterally compressed; callus obtuse and fitting the concave top of the internode; lower glume cartilaginous, 2-keeled, the keels dorsal, almost contiguous, separated by a narrow groove, not winged; upper glume strongly compressed, conspicuously winged towards the top of the keel; lower floret ♂, with hyaline lemma and well-developed palea; upper lemma bifid, passing between the teeth to a glabrous awn. Caryopsis narrowly ellipsoid. Pedicelled spikelet larger than the sessile, glabrous, asymetrically winged, awnless, conspicuous.
