Characteristics

Caespitose perennials, sometimes shortly rhizomatous. Culms cane-like. Leaves: ligule reduced to a ciliate rim; blade convolute, narrow, tapering into a fine tip. Inflorescence exserted, open, with few spikelets; rachilla of spikelets prolonged as a bristle. Glumes linear, papery at maturity, 9-nerved. Callus pointed, hairy. Lemma cylindrical, with 1 terminal and 2 much shorter lateral awns, densely hairy; corona absent; terminal awn persistent, geniculate, with column well-developed at maturity. Palea shorter than lemma.
