Characteristics

Leaves distinctly fused, old leaves forming a dry sheath around new set of leaves. Succulent shrub, with erect and decumbent branches to 28 cm long, internodes ochre to brown, 30-40 mm long, up to 4 mm diam. First leaf pair with long, loose sheaths enclosing subsequent leaves, free parts up to 35 mm long and 11 mm broad and 9 mm thick, second leaf pair shortly fused, only 9-15 mm long, both types papillate. Flowers solitary, on pedicels up to 15 mm long. Fruit 5-locular.
