Characteristics

Shrubs. Leaves alternate, rarely subopposite or nearly whorled; stipules present. Flowers solitary, axillary, bisexual; peduncle with 2 apical, subopposite bracteoles. Sepals 5, imbricate. Petals 5, imbricate. Stamens 5, inserted on margin of disc; filaments incurved; anthers introrse, with a broad connective. Ovary ±immersed in disc, 2-or rarely 3-locular with 2 basal to subaxile ovules per locule. Fruit a 1-or rarely 2-seeded capsule. Seeds arillate; testa crustaceous; endosperm copious.
