Characteristics

Liane 5–15 m. in height with stems more than 8 cm. in diameter; old bark often greyish or whitish, slightly fibrous; young branches smooth, sometimes with 4 small ridges.. Stipules with fimbriate margins or acute teeth up to 1 mm. long.. Petiole channelled, (3–)5–10(2–15) mm. long; blade papery to subcoriaceous, elliptic to obovate, 3–10(–17) cm. long, 1.3–4.5(–12.5) cm. wide, shortly acuminate (acumen 2–10 mm. long), cuneate, sometimes abruptly so, at the base; margin entire or with 6–15 teeth each side; secondary nerves, 4–7 pairs, the finest often indistinct when dry.. Inflorescences consisting of 1.2–3 mm. long axillary cymes, brownish red or brownish yellow when dry; axis quadrangular; bracts acute, slightly denticulate, at least near the base, to fimbriate; pedicels 2–2.5 mm. long.. Buds 1 mm. long.. Flowers white, green, cream, yellow or orange, 1.5–3.5 mm. in diameter.. Sepals unequal, ovate to lanceolate, sometimes slightly denticulate.. Petals subspathulate, ± 1.7 mm. long, 0.7 mm. wide, obtuse, 1 straight, 4 arcuate.. Stamens 0.3 mm. long; anthers 2 mm. wide.. Pistil, including the disc, ± 0.7 mm. in diameter, 0.4 mm. long.. Infructescence-axis distinctive, consisting of a succession of short zig-zag internodes, all branches having fallen off.. Fruits of (1–2)–3 mericarps; mericarps oblong, 2.5–4 cm. long, 1–1.8 cm. wide with a rounded, acute, subtruncate or sometimes bifid apex.. Seeds 2 in each mericarp, 2–3.5 cm. long, 0.8–1.2 cm. wide, the wing reddish pink, the testa brownish red, sometimes subapiculate.. Fig. 13/1, p. 50.
