Characteristics

Small to medium-sized tree, 6-22 m high, bole to 15 m high, to 40 cm in diameter. Branchlets terete, glabrous. Stipules or stipular scars not seen. Leaves: rachis 0.6-5 cm, glabrous, glands circular, sessile, with slightly raised margins and depressed central part, 0.5-0.8 mm in diameter; pinnae 1 pair, glabrous; petiolules 2-4 mm, glabrous; leaflets 1½-2 pairs per pinna, drying grey-green and glossy, rigidly chartaceous-coriaceous, equal-sided, ovate-elliptic, (2-)4-20 by 1.5-9 cm, base symmetrically cuneate, apex rounded or obscurely acuminate, both surfaces glabrous, principal lateral veins 4 or 5 per leaflet-half, arching, reticulation prominent on both surfaces. Inflorescences terminal, glabrous, consisting of pedunculate umbels, aggregated into racemes or corymbs; peduncles solitary or paired, 1.7-6 cm; umbels 15-18-flowered; pedicel 5-10 mm; floral bracts ovate, c. 0.5 mm, inconspicuous. Flowers tri-merous, possibly bisexual. Calyx green, subtubular or very narrowly campanulate, often deeply 2-lobed, 4-8 mm, glabrous, lobes ± irregular, ovate, obtuse-rounded, 2 mm. Corolla white, funnel-shaped, 9-12 mm, glabrous; lobes oblong, acute, 3-5 mm. Stamens white, to 25 mm, tube longer than the corolla-tube, shorter than the corolla. Ovary solitary, glabrous, subsessile (stipe c. 0.5 mm), surrounded by a nectary at base. Pod reddish brown outside, reddish inside, slightly curved, subcylindrical, 13-18 by 1.8-2 cm, woody-coriaceous, slighdy constricted between the seeds, glabrous, veins inconspicuous, pod dehiscing first along the dorsal suture. Seeds black, irreg-ular-elliptic, compressed, somewhat truncate in the parts adjacent to other seeds, 11-17 by 8-12 mm.
