Characteristics

Tufted or prostrate perennial, shortly caulescent, up to 300 mm tall. Leaves petiolate, lyrate-pinnatisect to cordate, apex obtuse to rounded, lightly felted equally on both surfaces. Involucral bracts glabrous, often dark red-purple, but outer bracts with linear, densely felted, reflexed apical appendage. Ray floret limb orange with dark band at base; disc florets black. Cypsela obovoid, 2 oblong dorsal cavities, densely hairy, basal ring of rigid hairs as long as cypsela; pappus scales biseriate, inner whorl longer than cypsela.
