Characteristics

Annual or perennial, white-tomentose herbs or shrublets. Leaves in basal rosettes or cauline and alternate, petiolate or sessile, spathulate to oblanceolate, entire to pinnatisect, abaxially tomentose to sparsely arachnoid. Capitula solitary, radiate, axillary or terminal, pedunculate; involucre ±hemispherical, multiseriate; bracts free, unequal; receptacle flat, alveolate; paleae absent. Ray florets uniseriate, female, fertile; ligules 3-lobed, yellow, orange, brick-red, cream, white, pink, purple, violet or blue. Disc florets bisexual, fertile, rarely inner ones female and sterile; corolla tubular, deeply 5-lobed; lobes occasionally with an abaxial, thick, deltoid, usually vividly, ±blackish projection at apex; anthers basally obtuse to sagittate, with ovate apical appendage; style branches 2, smooth or papillose. Achenes oblong-obovoid, to ±obconical, ventrally smooth or rugose and ribless, glabrous or hairy and dorsally 3–5-ribbed or winged, rarely with 2 furrows when mature, often tufted-hairy at base. Pappus scales biseriate, scarious.
More
Annual to perennial herbs; stems trailing or erect; latex 0. Lvs in rosettes and alternate on stems, lyrate-pinnatifid, toothed, or entire. Capitula axillary, solitary, on long peduncles. Involucral bracts free, in several series; outermost row small, narrowed to a linear to spathulate appendage; inner rows progressively longer, oblong, without appendages. Receptacle flat, alveolate, ciliate; scales 0. Outer florets ligulate, ♀. Disc florets ☿ or the inner ♂. Achenes obovoid to obconic, with 2 furrows on the dorsal side. Pappus of 2 rows of oblong scarious scales, the outer very short, the inner longer.
Achenes cylindric-turbinate, ribbed or winged, with the lateral wings folding to form 2 linear chambers on one side, sometimes transversally rugose on the other side, with or without a basal coma of long hairs, otherwise villous or glabrous; pappus c. 2-seriate of delicate hyaline scales, the inner pappus of 5–10 scales equalling the achene in length, the outer pappus smaller.
Disk-florets hermaphrodite, numerous, sometimes central florets functionally male; corollas infundibuliform, regularly 5-lobed; anther bases entire or shortly sagittate; style branches thickened-connate nearly to the apex.
Ray-florets female, sometimes neuter, uniseriate; rays strap-shaped, 3-denticulate; staminodes sometimes present; style branches free and lanceolate.
Phyllaries free, many-seriate, scarious-hyaline on the margins, the outer phyllaries usually with apical appendages.
Perennial or annual herbs, araneose-lanate or glandular, often acaulescent.
Receptacle flat, fimbrilliferous-alveolate with walls produced into setae.
Capitula heterogamous radiate, solitary, large and many-flowered.
Leaves alternate or radical, entire to lyrate-pinnatifid.
