Characteristics

Perennial, with several laxly branched trailing and ascending stems from a small rootstock, up to 2·5–7·5 dm. tall.. Stems rather slender, spreading pilose.. Leaflets elliptic-lanceolate to elliptic, up to 26–44 mm. long and (8–) 12–20 mm. wide, rather thinly pilose on both surfaces; petiole up to4–8(–15) mm. long.. Stipules oblong-lanceolate to oblong-ovate, up to 9–13(–16) mm. long and (1.5–)3–5 mm. wide, acuminate, joined at first to above the middle along the leaf-opposed margin, usually becoming free.. Racemes subumbelliform on (10–)15–27 cm. long peduncles, ± (4–)8–24-flowered; bracts lanceolate, often stalked, up to 6–9 mm. long, 1–2 mm. wide.. Calyx (8–)9–10 mm. long, densely silky pilose; upper lobes oblong-lanceolate.. Standard obovate to obovate-orbicular, 10–11 mm. long, bright yellow, silky pilose outside; wings with rows of folds between the upper veins; keel-petals 9–10 mm. long, with a crest on the lateral surface towards the base, and a claw shorter than the blade-width, glabrous along the margin.. Corolla bright yellow; standard 8–10 × 7–8 mm, obovate, silky pilose outside; wings 8–10 × 2.5–4.4 mm, with rows of folds between the upper veins; keel as long as the wings, the petals with a crest on the lateral surface towards the base, not appendiculate, with claw c. 2 mm long.
Inflorescence terminal, usually a subumbelliform raceme, (1)2–6-flowered (usually 8–24-flowered in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania); peduncle 8–16 cm long; bracts 3–9 × 1–2 mm, linear-lanceolate, entire.
Calyx (7)8–10 mm long, densely to sparsely silky pilose; upper lip divided to ± the middle, the lobes lanceolate; lower lip with teeth 5–6 mm long, narrowly triangular, acute.
Pod up to 40 × 5 mm, narrowly oblong, flat, densely subappressed pilose, with c. 10–14 seeds.
