Plants mostly 200-500 mm high. Stem compressed below and ± broadly elliptic in section, rounded above, (2)3-to 6-branched, branching subdichotomous, rarely branches also branched, branches terete, fairly short, slender, diverging, rarely with sessile lateral flower clusters, all clusters thus terminal. Leaves several, mostly basal, a few cauline and smaller, linear to narrowly lanceolate, 1.5-6.0 mm wide, ± 1/2 as long as stem. Flower clusters (2)4-flowered; spathes and bracts mostly 7-8 mm long, green below aging and drying black with broad, dull-translucent, membranous margins, becoming torn with age. Flowers ± sessile or on pedicels up to 2 mm long, usually deep blue; inner tepals obovate, 9-10 x 4-5 mm, outer slightly smaller. Filaments suberect, 2.5-3.5 mm long, anthers ± 2.5 mm long. Style 6-8 mm long, deflexed, broadly to narrowly 3-lobed apically. Capsules ovoid, 3-lobed, (4-)5 mm long, usually ± sessile or on pedicels up to 4 mm long. Seeds angular-prismatic, sculpturing foveate.
