Woody herb, perennial, 0.3–2(–2.4) m tall, strongly aromatic; stems branched, greyish white, 3–10 mm in diameter, strongly grooved, white-pubescent and glandular.. Leaves alternate, grey-green above, grey to whitish beneath, in outline ovate, sometimes broadly ovate, bi-to tri-pinnatifid, 3–14 cm long, 1.5–6 cm wide, pseudopetiole 1–4 cm long, slightly winged, with 2 lobed basal auricles, canaliculate and densely pubescent, blade with up to 10 main pinnae, each with up to 9 second order pinnae, each of these with up to 3 lobes, the final lobes 2–4 mm long, 1–1.5 mm wide, with inrolled margins and an obtuse apex.. Capitula 2–4 mm long, many (hundreds) in large, leafy panicles up to 35 cm long, 12 cm in diameter, the individual capitula nodding, on densely white-pubescent stalks of 1–4 mm long, the bract subulate, 1 mm long, densely white-pubescent; phyllaries 12–15, 2–3-seriate, subequal except for a few smaller outer ones, appressed at anthesis, slightly spreading in the fruiting stage, grey-green or dull green, lanceolate, 1.5–3 mm long, 0.4–1.4 mm wide, acute, sparsely to densely whitish pubescent except for the brown scarious margins; receptacle conical, pilose, glandular.. Outer florets 1-seriate, 4–10 in number, the corolla narrowly tubular, 1.2–1.4 mm long, with a very oblique mouth, 2–3-toothed; style 1.8–2.2 mm with recurved and truncate branches; inner florets 10–35 in number, yellow or pale yellow, the tube 1–1.8 mm long, the lobes 0.2–0.4 mm; anthers included, 0.8–1.2 mm long, very briefly sagittate at the base, at the apex with a triangular appendage, style 1.3–2 mm long..
