Characteristics

Herbs, perennial, 40-120 cm tall, densely glandular pubescent. Lower and middle stem leaves ± sessile; leaf blade elliptic or oblong, 3-4(-7) × 1-1.5(-2) cm, abaxially gray arachnoid tomentose except on veins, adaxially obviously glandular pubescent, 2-pinnatisect; segments 4 or 5 pairs, elliptic-ovate, 2-or 3-lobuled; lobules deeply serrate, 3-4 × 1-1.5(-2) mm, margin revolute, apex acute. Uppermost leaves 1-or 2-pinnatisect; leaflike bracts pinnatisect or 3-5-partite. Synflorescence a dense, narrow panicle. Capitula dense. Involucre broadly ovoid or campanulate, (3-)4-5 mm in diam.; phyllaries densely tomentose. Marginal female florets 8-10. Disk florets 30-40(-50), bisexual. Achenes oblong or obovoid-oblong. Fl. and fr. Aug-Oct.
