Species

Angiosperms > Gentianales > Apocynaceae > Aspidoglossum

Characteristics

Plants 30-60 cm tall, stems simple or sparsely branched. Leaves opposite, shorter or longer than internodes; lamina 1.5-3.5 x 0.05-0.15 cm, held vertically; surfaces glabrous or minutely brown glandular-scabrid. Flowers 3-7 per node, dull green or yellow-brown; pedicels 4-7 mm long. Calyx segments 1.5-2 x 0.75-1 mm, sparsely pilose with brown glandular hairs. Corolla lobes 2.5-3.5 x 1-2 mm, spreading to reflexed, flat to replicate at anthesis, completely glabrous or the dorsal surface sparsely pilose with brown glandular hairs. Corona lobes of unique and striking form, each comprising an erect basal lobe c. 1 mm high bearing two dorsal and one ventral appendages, these long, linear and strongly curved, the outer ones into the centre of the flower and the inner one, between them, in the opposite direction. Corpusculum 0.1-0.28 mm long; translator arms flattened; pollinium 0.3-0.45 mm long, crescentic, with germination zone conspicuously surmounted by the curved apex of the pollinium. Mature fruit unknown; young fruits puberulent, without bristles.
