Aspidoglossum glabrescens (Schltr.) Kupicha

Species

Angiosperms > Gentianales > Apocynaceae > Aspidoglossum

Characteristics

Plants 35-60 cm tall, stems rarely branched. Leaves opposite, shorter or longer than internodes; lamina 1.5-3.5 x 0.05-0.1 cm; surfaces glabrous, only the lower midrib sometimes minutely puberulous. Flowers 2-7 per node; pedicels 4-8 mm long. Calyx segments 1.5-3 x 1 mm, dorsally pilose with brown glandular hairs and sometimes also hyaline hairs. Corolla lobes 2-4.5 x 1-2 mm, campanulate or spreading at an thesis, ± flat, dull yellow to brownish; dorsal surface sparsely pilose with brown glandular hairs, or very rarely hairs hyaline; ventral surface rarely glabrous, usually either densely and uniformly pubescent or long-pilose; in the latter case the indumentum may be a complete covering or present only at base or round the margin. Corona with erect basal lobe 1-3 mm long, very variable in shape, being orbicular in dorsal view or bifid at apex, or lanceolate; ventral appendage long or short, inflexed or erect; corona white or dull yellow. Pollinaria of two types, with some intermediates: type 1 has corpusculum 0.15-0.25 mm long and pollinia 0.43-0.55 mm long, slender, with clear germination zone surmounted by the conspicuously thickened, curved apex of the pollinium; type 2 has corpusculum 0.3-0.38 mm long and pollinia 0.3-0.45 mm long, only c. 2.5 times as long as broad, without apparent germination zone; in both types the translator arms are flattened and ribbon-like, but broader and shorter in type 2. Fruit 6-7.5 cm long, slender, puberulent.
More
Perennial, geophytic herb, 350-600 m high. Stems erect, rarely branched. Leaves opposite, longer or shorter than internodes, blade 15-35 x 0.5-1.0 mm, both sides glabrous, sometimes lower midrib puberulous. Inflorescence with 2-7 flowers. Flowers: pedicels up to 4-8 mm long; corolla lobes 2.0-4.5 x 1-2 mm, cup-shaped to spreading at anthesis, dorsal surface sparsely pilose with brown glandular hairs, ventral surface densely and uniformly pubescent or long-pilose; corona white or dull yellow, erect basal lobe bifid, ventral process erect or inflexed. Pollinia very variable with or without conspicuous germination zone; corpusculum 0.1-0.5 mm long; translator arms flattened, ribbon-like. Flowering time Oct.-Mar. Fruit 60-75 mm long, pubescent without bristles.
Perennial herb, 0.35-0.60 m high. Leaves opposite. Glandular hairs usually present. Corolla lobes inside pilose to pubescent; if glabrous then pollinia long and slender. Corona of 5 segments. Corpusculum inconspicuous, smaller than pollinia. Flowers dull yellow to brownish; corona white or dull yellow.
