Species

Angiosperms > Gentianales > Apocynaceae > Aspidoglossum

Characteristics

Plants 6-14 cm tall, occasionally with two stems. Leaves longer than internodes, paired or often in whorls of 3-5 at least at flowering nodes; lamina 1.8-4.5 x 0.4-1.4 cm, varying from elliptic to obovate or linear; upper leaf surface scabrid-pubescent throughout or only near the margin, lower surface pilose or pubescent especially on midrib and veins. Flowers 4-7 per node; pedicels 8-15 mm long. Calyx segments 2.5-5 x 0.75-1.5 mm, hyaline patent-pilose. Corolla lobes 7.5-9 x 2-4 mm, spreading and replicate at anthesis, jade green; lower surface appressed-pilose in centre of upper half, upper surface completely glabrous or with a patch of pubescence at base. Corona 5.5-8 mm high, of type A; basal lobe 2.5-4 mm high with shoulders peaked, apical process erect; appendage erect or slightly inflexed, longer than or equalling process; appendage and inner surface of basal lobe white, outer surface of lobe flushed and spotted with maroon. Corpusculum 0.38-0.7 mm long; translator arms robust, somewhat flattened; pollinium 0.63-0.78 mm long, without obvious germination zone. Fruit unknown.
More

Leaves opposite, longer than nodes, also in whorls of 3-5 towards apex of stem; blade elliptic to obovate, 18-45 x 4-14 mm, upper surface scabrid-pubescent, lower surface pilose, midrib and veins pubescent. Inflorescence 4-7-flowered. Flowers: pedicels 8-15 mm long; corolla spreading and replicate; lobes 7.5-9.0 mm long, glabrous inside, appressed-hairy on outside of upper half, jade-green; corona inner surface white, outer surface flushed or maroon-spotted, both processes white, basal lobe with peaked shoulders and erect or slightly inflexed apical process, ventral process erect. Pollinia without distinct germination zone, reniform; translator arms flat and robust. Flowering time Sept.-Nov.
