Plants 50-140 cm tall; stems almost always branched in the inflorescence. Leaves opposite, longer or shorter than internodes; lamina 2-7.5 x 0.05-0.2 cm; upper surface pubescent or glabrous, lower surface completely glabrous or with pubescent midrib. Flowers (1-) 6-13 per node; pedicels 2-10 mm long. Calyx segments 1-2 x 0.5-1 mm, pilose. Corolla lobes 2-3 x 1-1.5 mm, replicate with apex incurved, dull purplish red outside, creamy or yellowish inside; dorsal surface pilose, ventral surface glabrous to pubescent in the centre, long-pilose along the sides and particularly at the tip, the hairs up to 1 mm long. Corona 1-2 mm high, of type B; basal lobe 0.75-1 mm high with square or rounded shoulders; ventral appendage a short or prolonged inflexed triangular beak; dorsal transverse ridge faint or absent; sometimes (Zimbabwe, Tanzania) the corona lobe represented by an erect scale 3-toothed at apex, the middle tooth the longest; corona whitish with purple streaks. Corpusculum 0.13-0.25 mm long; pollinium 0.33-0.48 mm long, with clear germination zone. Fruit rarely developed, 5-6 mm long, densely puberulent.
