Characteristics

Plants 35-78 cm tall, stems simple or branched. Leaves opposite, longer than internodes and often crowded; lamina 2.5-3.8 x 0.05-0.3 cm; upper surface glabrous, pubescent or pilose, lower surface glabrous except for the pubescent midrib. Flowers 4-9 per node; pedicels 1-3 mm long. Calyx segments 1.5-2 x 0.5 mm, pilose. Corolla lobes 2-2.5 x 1 mm, scarcely expanding at anthesis, dark brown; dorsal surface pilose, ventral surface minutely pubescent. Corona c. 1 mm high, each lobe with a minute triangular apical process and a slightly larger indexed ventral appendage, the latter sometimes bifid at apex; corona maroon. Corpusculum 0.18-0.25 mm long, slender; pollinium 0.4 mm long, with distinct germination zone.
