Characteristics

Ferns with nest-like habit. Rhizome branching to form more than one growing point, scaly, the scales to c. 30 mm long, c. 2 mm wide, narrowly lanceolate to linear with pale brown cell walls and ciliate margins. Fronds ± straight, forming an irregular, untidy rosette, at a small angle to vertical. Stipe indistinct to absent. Rachis in cross-section flat on upper surface, strongly keeled below. Lamina narrowly obovate, simple, 50–130 cm long, 8–13 cm wide, dark green, ± glabrous, tapering from just above middle to a very narrow base (less than 1 cm wide for at least 10 cm); margins entire; apices subacute or obtuse; veins free except for a marginal connection. Sori very numerous, close together, the longest 16–40 mm long, extending from midrib to two thirds of the distance to the margin. Perispores pale with fimbriate broad ridges and fenestrate lacunae.
