Characteristics

Lithophytic fern. Rhizome short-creeping, scaly, the scales narrowly ovate, c. 3–6 mm long, long-acuminate, with dark brown cell walls. Stipe dark brown to black becoming green above, sparsely scaly; stipe 2.5–10 cm long, 0.5–2.5 mm diam. Lamina 1-pinnate, elliptic or narrowly ovate with acute to acuminate apices, 5.5–13 (–24) cm long, 2.5–4 (–12) cm wide, light green, sparsely scaly on rachis and pinnae; scales on rachis and base of pinnae lanceolate, to 1.5 mm long, to 0.5 mm wide, with dark brown cell walls and few marginal cilia. Pinnae in 6–9 (–21) pairs, ovate to narrowly ovate; bases cuneate to unevenly cuneate, sometimes with margin facing rhizome (basicsopic) excised, stalked; margins toothed to lobed to near midvein; apices obtuse to acuminate; longest pinnae near middle, 8–20 (–60) mm long, 6–14 (–30) mm wide; upper pinnae reducing to an ovate pinnatifid apical segment. Sori 3–17 mm long. Perispores with narrow wings.

Usage

Asplenium listeri features on a Christmas Island 60c postage stamp as part of a 2012 Christmas Island Ferns Set. It was also depicted on a 50c stamp as one of five stamps commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Christmas Island as an Australian Territory (1958–2008).
