Characteristics

Tree to 40 m tall, the trunk often with thick buttresses; young branches glabrescent, inconspicuously lenticellate. Stipules to 1.7 cm long, very early caducous. Leaves coriaceous, broadly ovate, 4.5-12 cm long, 3-9.5 cm wide, abruptly acuminate at apex, the acumen 1-3 mm long, cordate at base, glabrous and shiny above, glabrous beneath; midrib prominulous above, prominent beneath; primary veins 9-12 pairs, lightly prominulous above, prominulous and glabrous beneath; petioles 1-3 mm long, short and thick, glabrous. Inflorescences of terminal and subterminal racemes 4-8 cm long, borne in single or more often in paired branches, densely tomentellous on exterior, puberulous within; bracts and bracteoles ovate, tomentellous, early caducous. Receptacle 5-7 mm long, conical to campanulate, tomentellous on exterior, sessile; calyx lobes slightly unequal, tomentellous on both surfaces. Petals c. 1 mm long, I obovate, glabrous. Stamens c. 10, inserted on one I side of ring, the filaments 10-12 mm long. Ovary densely pilose. Style slender, hirsutulous on lower portion. Fruit 6 cm long, 5 cm wide, ovoid; epicarp crustaceous verrucose, mesocarp 5 mm thick, fibrous, hard, endocarp thin.
