Characteristics

Plants gynodioecious, with male and female plants similar. Culms 3 m high; internodes hollow. Leaves: sheath waxy; blade 1 m long, 10–20 mm wide, with a distinct keel at least on lower leaves, with distinct secondary veins. Inflorescences open, with 500–1000 spikelets. Bisexual spikelets and florets similar to female. Female spikelets 18–22 mm long, with 1–3 florets. Female glumes substantially exceeding florets, similar, yellow to golden-straw; lower glume 18–22 mm long. Female lemma: body 7–8 mm long, villous; setae 1–4 mm long; awn 10–12 mm long. Female palea linear to lorate, 6–7 mm long, glabrous between keels. Anthers 2.5–3 mm long.
