Characteristics

Plants to 2 m tall. Leaves: ligule 0.8–1.5 mm long (to 3 mm long when continuous with sheath margins), truncate to obliquely truncate, scarcely ciliate; auricles thickened, glabrous; blade flat or convolute, 3–6 mm wide, scabrous to minutely scaberulous, occasionally with scattered hairs. Inflorescence exserted at length, to 55 cm long, usually spreading, moderately sparse. Glumes unequal, 8–14 mm long, broad and inflated at middle, acuminate, with long fine tips often reduced to midrib. Callus 0.4–1 (–1.5) mm long, short and broad, hairy. Lemma fusiform, 4–7.5 mm long, gold-brown to dark red-brown at maturity, white-to goldsericeous; coma of sparse appressed hairs to 1.5 mm long, or occasionally absent; lobes minute or absent; awn 25–40 mm long, with column 10–17 mm long and scabrous, and bristle scaberulous. Palea acuminate. Lodicules 3; abaxial lodicules broadly cuneate; paleal oblong.
