Plants to c. 1.5 m tall, sometimes very shortly rhizomatous. Culms erect or slightly geniculate at base. Leaves: ligule 1–7 mm long, truncate, membranous; auricles c. 1 mm long, ±thickened; blade expanded or loosely inrolled, to 20 cm long, 2–2.5 mm wide, strongly ribbed on abaxial surface, glabrous. Inflorescence 20–40 cm long, contracted, with distant fascicles of unequal, few-flowered branches. Glumes subequal, 5–6.5 mm long, acute to acuminate. Callus c. 0.5 mm long, slightly curved, blunt, sericeous. Lemma 3–4.5 mm long, slightly granular, with white hairs; coma c. 0.2 mm long, sparse; lobes absent; awn once-or twice-geniculate, 20–35 mm long, 0.1–0.2 mm wide near base, minutely scabrous, with bristle ±straight. Palea 50–60% of length of lemma, obtuse. Lodicules 3, obtuse.
