Characteristics

Plants to 0.7 m tall, with basal leaves c. a quarter the height. Culms erect, glabrous; nodes 2–5, glabrous, concealed or belatedly exserted. Leaves glabrous to scaberulous; sheath inflated; ligule 4–11 mm long, obtuse, entire or laciniate; auricles acute, tufted; blade triangular to linear, to 20 cm long. Inflorescence 10–30 cm long. Glumes very unequal, 13–21 mm long, acute to acuminate, translucent. Callus 2.5–3.5 mm long, densely sericeous. Lemma 6.5–8.5 mm long, smooth, white to pale yellow at maturity with conspicuous central nerve, pubescent with stiff hairs 0.2–0.3 mm long; lobes 1 or 2, to 0.25 mm long; awn 80–140 mm long, with column 20–40 mm long, dark brown and scabrous and bristle pale and scaberulous. Palea subequal to lemma, acute. Lodicules 2 or 3; abaxial lodicules oblong; paleal absent or acute.
