Characteristics

Plants to 1.2 m tall. Leaves: ligule 0.5–1.5 mm long, truncate; auricles thickened, with hairtufts to 1 mm long; blade flat or weakly rolled, 3–5 mm wide, ribbed, glabrous to scabrous, sometimes with scattered longer hairs. Inflorescence 15–30 cm long, open, sparse. Glumes unequal, 12–16 (–18) mm long, acuminate to acute-oblong, erose at tip. Callus 1.5–2.5 mm long, curved, sericeous with hairs yellow at maturity. Lemma oblong-cylindrical, slightly gibbous, (5.8–) 6.5–8 mm long, granular, reddish brown to black at maturity, with spreading white hairs; coma 0.5–1.0 mm long; lobes 0.1 (–0.5) mm long; awn 45–65 mm long, with column 18–25 mm long and densely pubescent, and bristle scabrous. Palea broadly acute to acuminate. Lodicules 3; abaxial lodicules oblong or narrowly triangular; paleal oblong to narrowly triangular.
