Characteristics

Plants to c. 1.5 m tall, not rhizomatous. Culms erect, slightly geniculate at base, pubescent; nodes 2–4, densely sericeous. Leaves: ligule 0.1–4 mm long, truncate to shortly laciniate; auricles sometimes present, thickened, glabrous; blade weakly rolled, 1.5–4.5 mm wide, moderately to strongly ribbed, scabrous to pubescent. Inflorescence 10–30 cm long, contracted (although spreading at anthesis), moderately dense. Glumes unequal to equal, 13–18 mm long, acuminate. Callus 1.2–1.8 mm long, densely sericeous. Lemma cylindrical, 5.5–7 mm long, scabrous, especially at apex, white-sericeous; awn 35–45 mm long, with column 13–20 mm long, 10–13 mm to first bend, pubescent to plumose with hairs 0.5–1 mm long and bristle scabrous. Palea subequal to lemma, acute. Lodicules 3.
