Characteristics

Plants to 0.6 m tall, with basal shoots intravaginal. Culms usually geniculate; nodes 2, usually exserted. Leaves: ligule 0.5–2.5 mm long, obtuse, with or without cilia, firmly membranous, puberulous on abaxial surface; auricles tufted; blade loosely convolute, less than 0.5 mm wide, flexuose, scaberulous and pubescent and/or hirsute on abaxial surface. Inflorescence belatedly exserted, to 20 cm long, narrowly open, moderately sparse; spikelets gaping narrowly. Glumes unequal, 8–10 mm long, acute to acuminate. Callus 1–1.5 mm long, straight, with hairs similar to those of lemma. Lemma narrowly cylindrical to fusiform, 4.5–5.5 mm long, finely granular to coarsely granular upwards, black at maturity with paler midnerve, with hairs white to golden; coma obscure, 0.6–0.8 mm long; lobes to 0.25 mm long; awn 35–55 (–60) mm long, scaberulous, with column 15–21 mm long. Palea to 0.5 mm shorter than lemma, broadly acute to obtuse. Lodicules 3, cuneate or triangular-acute.
