Characteristics

Plants to 1.5 m tall. Leaves: ligule 0.3–0.5 mm long, truncate; auricles thickened, spreading, glabrous; blade flat or convolute, 2–5 mm wide, with adaxial surface very strongly ribbed and minutely puberulous. Inflorescence to 40 cm long, contracted, moderately sparse. Glumes unequal, 11–17 mm long, broad and inflated at middle, acute to acuminate. Callus 1–1.5 mm long, sturdy, slightly curved, hairy. Lemma cylindrical, gibbous, 4.5–6 mm long, strongly granular, red-brown to almost black at maturity, with white to yellow hairs; coma 0.8–1.3 mm long, with spreading hairs; lobes absent; awn eccentric, 25–35 (–50) mm long, scabrous, with column 12–20 mm long. Palea ±mucronate. Lodicules 3; abaxial lodicules oblong to narrowly cuneate; paleal oblong to acute.
