Characteristics

Plants to 1 m tall, not rhizomatous. Culms erect or geniculate, minutely scaberulous; nodes 2–5. Leaves: ligule (0.3–) 1.5–3 mm long, truncate, membranous, sericeous; auricles absent; blade weakly rolled, 1.5–3 mm wide, ribbed, scabrous on abaxial surface. Inflorescence 10–25 cm long, contracted, moderately dense. Glumes unequal, 15–20 mm long, acute to acuminate. Callus 1.5–3 mm long, densely sericeous. Lemma cylindrical, 5–7.5 mm long, smooth, granular towards apex, reddish brown at maturity, white-to golden-sericeous; awn 30–60 mm long with column 10–20 mm long, c. 10 mm to first bend, densely plumose with hairs 0.5–4 mm long extending for some distance along bristle and remaining bristle scabrous. Palea ±equal to lemma, acute. Lodicules 2, obtuse.
