Characteristics

Plants to 0.9 m tall, with basal leaves c. a tenth the height. Culms erect, glabrous or scaberulous; nodes 1–4, glabrous, rarely exserted. Leaves: sheath not inflated, with transparent, flattened and flexuose hairs; ligule 1–15 mm long, truncate, obtuse to laciniate on upper leaves; blade triangular to acuminate, 5–15 (–20) cm long, glabrous to scabrous on abaxial surface. Inflorescence 10–35 cm long. Glumes very unequal, 13–21 mm long, hyaline at tip. Callus 1.5–3.5 mm long, densely pubescent. Lemma 7–8 mm long, coriaceous, white to pale yellow at maturity, with at least the central nerve visible, pubescent with stiff hairs 0.2–0.4 mm long; lobes 1 or 2, 0.1–0.4 mm long; awn 60–200 mm long, with column 14–40 mm long and dark brown at maturity and bristle pale yellow. Palea equal to or slightly longer than lemma, broadly acute. Lodicules 3; 2 abaxial lodicules oblong; paleal acute.
